Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the NFL may look at a play off expansion that could be brought into to the 2015 season. The proposal was rejected by the competition committee but plans are back on the NFL agenda.
Is this a sign the the NFL are making steps to evolve football's elite competition? The nature of the current play off format means that the most consistent teams have an opportunity to reach the conference play off and then onto the pinnacle of football the Super Bowl.
Goodell stated "If expanding the postseason would allow other teams to get into the dance and they have a chance of winning the Super Bowl, that's a good thing for the fans, thats a good thing competitively"(source NFL.com)
The NFL may have an eye on the bigger picture and will ultimately have the final say on what goes on. If the post season expansion is sanctioned, what next a league expansion to 32 teams? A crazy thought? Who would have predicted three London games a season back in 1985? The game of football is becoming increasingly popular outside the USA and this may be seen as an opportunity to attract a larger audience across the globe.
