This game was no Halloween horror show. The only spooky thing about this game was my inquisition in to the last time a team won by a safety just an hour before kick off. The Bengals were in good form and the Dolphins were trying to stop the rot by avoiding a fifth straight defeat.
Neither side could convert a third down and where forced to punt. DT Gino Atkins penetrated the Miami pocket and sacked Ryan Tannehill. The Dolphins did a nice job stopping the Bengals on third and short. With just over seven minutes left in the first Andy Dalton found AJ Green for a six yard gain. Just a few drives later and Cameron Wake got to Dalton to force a turnover on their own 25 yard line. Caleb Sturgis missed a 34 yard field goal attempt, dragging the football right of the upright. Dalton linked up well with AJ Green who caught at the Miami 26 yard line to end the first quarter.
The Bengals continued to drive forward, hesitation by Dalton on a third down resulted in a 31 yard field goal conversation by Mike Nugent to make the score 3-0. RB Lamar Miller went on a mazy run only to fumble the ball at the Cincinnati 10 yard line, the Bengals returned the ball to their own 41. AJ Green dropped an easy catch to force another Bengals punt, this would prove costly later on in the game. Tannehill then produced a big play throwing vertically down field to Mike Wallace on the Bengals 28 yard line. Daniel Tomas continued to drive the football. Tannehill on play action rolled out to the right and fired to Thomas on the 15 for a first down. Another 5 yard drive by Thomas created a 2nd and 5. The Bengals stopped Thomas at the one yard line. On the 3rd down Ryan Tannehill leapt into the end zone for six. The extra point was good. CB Dimitri Patterson picked of Andy Dalton with 30 seconds left on the clock. Sturgess converted a field goal to make the score 10-3 in Miami’s favour
The Bengals were almost stopped by the Miami d-line on 4th and inches. Jones made a deep run into the end zone but the touchdown was ruled out for a flag. DT Jared ODrick sacked Dalton on the Miami 20 yard line. Andy Dalton then threw a pick six - CB Brent Grimes ran from his own 4 yard line all the way into the end zone. Towards the end of the quarter Bernard ran for 11 yards and a 1st and goal. Two plays later and Bernard powered his way into the end zone for the touchdown. The extra point was converted to make the score 17-10, Miami.
Inside the first minute TE Jermiane Gresham picked up a 17 yard reception from Andy Dalton. What came next was quite simply amazing by Giovani Bernard. He picked up the ball on the Miami 42 , he jinked right before being forced back and left, a long sweeping run outside before cutting infield did the job to evade the Miami defense and find the end zone. What a run! The extra point tied the game at 17. DT Paul Soliai sacked Dalton on his own 46. Just 16 seconds were left on the clock when Caleb Sturgis converted a 44 yard field goal to rescue the game at 20-20.
With 6:38 The Bengals were on a 3rd and 10. Cameron Wake forced his way through the Cincinnati pocket to sack Andy Dalton.
Full Time Cincinnati 20-22 Miami
It was a thoroughly entertaining game of Thursday Night Football. Miami should have put the game out of sight and all credit to Cincinnati for coming back into it. Andy Dalton will be disappointed with his performance. 3 interceptions including a pick six and conceding a safety contributed to the Miami win. The Miami defense played smart aggressive football to ensure that a fifth straight defeat was avoided.
